You might also enjoy Lauren Willig's novels--the first is *The Secret History of the Pink Carnation.* They're a take on the Scarlet Pimpernel--what if he were real? The main character is writing her dissertation on spies during the time period, and finds a whole series of floral sobriquets--the Purple Gentian, the Pink Carnation, the Black Tulip . . . The books go back and forth between the modern researcher and the history she's digging up.
